# Chatbot settings

> Every field on the chatbot Settings screens, what it does, and its default.

Open the settings from the chatbot sidebar: **Advanced** > **Settings**. The Settings screen has these tabs: **General**, **Chat Modes**, **Localization**, **Personas**, **Instructions**, and **Webhooks**.

Managers, Admins, and Super Admins can see and change these settings. Agents cannot open Settings. See [Team members](/docs/guides/account/team-members.md).

Select **Save Changes** to keep your changes, unless the table says otherwise.

## General

| Field | What it does | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Your Chatbot ID** | Shows the ID of the chatbot, with a **Copy** button. Use it when a plugin or integration asks for the chatbot ID. Read-only. | |
| **Description** | Text shown on the home screen of your chat widget. | Empty |
| **Support Email** | The reply-to address on emails that SiteGPT sends to your visitors, for example email verification codes and [emails with your team's replies](/docs/guides/human-support/reply-and-take-over.md#when-sitegpt-emails-your-reply-to-the-visitor). Outside HIPAA workspaces, the emails with your team's replies do not use it: the visitor's answer comes back into the conversation. | Empty. Verification code emails then use your account email. |
| **Allowed Domains** | The websites that can embed this chatbot. Type a domain and press Enter. Each domain also covers its subdomains. Up to 50 domains. The dashboard preview always works. With domains in the list, the hosted chat page also opens only from these websites and from the dashboard. See [Control where the chatbot appears](/docs/guides/install/control-where-it-appears.md#allow-only-your-own-websites). | Empty (any website) |
| **Excluded Pages** | Pages of your site where the floating chat button does not show. `/pricing` matches that page only. `/checkout/*` matches that page and every page under it. Up to 50 paths. Inline embeds are not affected. | Empty (every page) |
| **Disable smart follow up questions** | Turns off the follow-up questions that the AI suggests after each answer. | Off |
| **Number of smart follow up questions to be shown** | How many AI follow-up questions to show. From 1 to 5. | 3 |
| **Enable Page Context Awareness** | Sends the URL, title, and description of the page the visitor is on to the chatbot. The page text itself is not sent. | Off |
| **GPT Model** | The model that writes answers: **GPT-4.1 Mini** or **GPT-4.1**. | GPT-4.1 |
| **Limit Messages Per Conversation** | When on, visitors must start a new conversation after a set number of chatbot answers. Applies in the website widget, on the hosted chat page, and in the API. Needs the Growth plan or above on the account that owns the chatbot. If that plan no longer includes it, the limit stops applying. | Off |
| **Max Messages Per Conversation** | The number of chatbot answers allowed before the visitor must start a new conversation. From 1 to 1000. Available when **Limit Messages Per Conversation** is on. | |

The **Danger Zone** at the bottom of **General** has the button to delete the chatbot. Only Super Admins see it. See [Manage your chatbots](/docs/guides/account/manage-chatbots.md).

## Chat Modes

Sets who answers a new conversation first.

| Option | What it does | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Always Starts New Conversation with AI** | Every new conversation starts in AI mode. The chatbot answers. | Selected |
| **Always Starts New Conversation with Human** | Every new conversation starts in human mode. The AI does not reply. Your team answers from the dashboard. | |
| **Follow Working Hours** | New conversations start in human mode during your working hours. Outside them, the AI answers, or your team answers later and the visitor gets an away message. | |
| **Let the Visitor Choose** | New conversations on the website widget and WhatsApp start by asking whether the visitor wants the AI or a person. Other channels start with the AI. Needs **Enable Human Support**. While it is off, the AI answers, and the page shows a note under the option. | |

You can select one option. Saving one turns the others off.

With **Follow Working Hours** selected, the page shows these settings:

| Setting | What it does | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Time zone** | The time zone of your working hours. | The time zone of your browser |
| **Working hours** | The days your team works, with up to 4 time ranges per day. A day without a check mark is **Closed**. | Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:00 |
| **When a visitor asks for a person during these hours** | The message for a visitor who asks for a person during your hours. The website widget then hands the conversation over with no dialog and no request for contact details. Up to 2,000 characters. | "Thanks! Someone from our team will reply here shortly." |
| **Outside working hours** | **The AI answers**, or **Your team answers later**. | **The AI answers** |
| **Away message** | The message that a visitor gets outside working hours with **Your team answers later**. WhatsApp and Messenger also send it when a visitor asks for a person outside your hours. Up to 2,000 characters. | A default text that you can change |

With **Let the Visitor Choose** selected, the page shows these settings:

| Setting | What it does | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Question** | The question that the visitor sees. Up to 1,000 characters. | "Would you like to chat with our AI assistant or talk to a person?" |
| **AI button** | The label of the button that starts with the AI. Up to 20 characters. Must differ from **Person button**. | **Chat with AI** |
| **Person button** | The label of the button that hands the conversation to your team. Up to 20 characters. | **Talk to a person** |
| **Use your team's hours** | Adds a working hours schedule that decides what a visitor who asks for a person gets. It does not change how new conversations start. Shows **Time zone**, **Working hours**, **When a visitor asks for a person during these hours**, and **When a visitor asks for a person outside these hours** (sent on WhatsApp and Messenger). Clearing it and saving deletes the schedule. | Selected when a schedule is saved |

See [Answer during working hours](/docs/guides/human-support/set-up-human-support.md#answer-during-working-hours), [Connect visitors to your team during your hours](/docs/guides/human-support/set-up-human-support.md#connect-visitors-to-your-team-during-your-hours), and [Let the visitor choose the AI or a person](/docs/guides/human-support/set-up-human-support.md#let-the-visitor-choose-the-ai-or-a-person).

## Localization

The sidebar also links to this tab as **Customizations** > **Language & Region**. It sets the text that the chat widget shows to visitors.

| Section | What you set |
| - | - |
| **Language** | **Timestamp language**: the language of the times under each message, such as "2 minutes ago". |
| **Home** | Text on the widget home screen, such as **Start a conversation**. |
| **Messages** | Text on the conversation list, such as **No Messages**. |
| **Message** | Names and system text inside a conversation: **Bot**, **You**, **Agent**, the escalation confirmation, and the text shown when a visitor reaches the message limit per conversation. |
| **Top Menu** | Labels in the widget menu, such as **Refresh chat** and **Download**. |
| **Account** | Text for visitor email verification, such as **Verify your email**. |
| **Lead Form** | Text on the lead form. |

Each field label shows the default English text. Leave a field as it is to keep the default. These fields change the widget text only. They do not change the language of the answers.

See [Change the widget language and text](/docs/guides/widget/language-and-text.md).

## Personas

A persona sets the tone of the chatbot's answers. Select one persona per chatbot.

| Section | What it contains |
| - | - |
| **Default Personas** | Built-in personas, such as **Default**, **Neutral**, and **Sales Expert**. |
| **Custom Personas** | Personas you add. Each one has a **Title**, a **Description**, and **Instructions**. |

If you do not select a persona, the chatbot uses **Default**, which keeps answers short.

See [Write instructions and choose a persona](/docs/guides/answers/write-instructions.md).

## Instructions

| Section | Fields | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Fallback Message** | **Fallback Message**: the answer the chatbot gives when it cannot find the information in your content. Save it with **Save Fallback Message**. | "I'm sorry, I don't have enough information to answer your question, but I'm happy to assist with any other questions you may have." |
| **Default Instructions** | One built-in option, **None**. It uses the default AI behavior with no custom instructions. | **None** |
| **Custom Instructions** | Instructions you add. Each one has a **Title** and **Instructions**. When you edit a saved instruction, you can also set its **Creativity Level** from 0 (more focused) to 1 (more random and creative). | Creativity Level 0.5 |

See [Write instructions and choose a persona](/docs/guides/answers/write-instructions.md) and [Keep answers on topic](/docs/guides/answers/keep-answers-on-topic.md).

## Webhooks

This tab shows only when the chatbot owner's plan includes webhooks. See [Plans and limits](/docs/reference/plans-and-limits.md).

| Field | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Messages Webhook URL** | SiteGPT sends a request to this URL for each new message in a conversation. This includes AI answers, replies from your team, and system messages. |
| **Messages Webhook Token** | Sent in the `X-WEBHOOK-TOKEN` header of message webhooks, so you can check the request came from SiteGPT. |
| **Escalation Webhook URL** | SiteGPT sends a request to this URL when a visitor escalates a conversation. If the visitor then gives their contact details, SiteGPT sends a second request with those details. |
| **Escalation Webhook Token** | Sent in the `X-WEBHOOK-TOKEN` header of escalation webhooks. |
| **Leads Webhook URL** | SiteGPT sends a request to this URL when the chatbot collects a new lead. |
| **Leads Webhook Token** | Sent in the `X-WEBHOOK-TOKEN` header of lead webhooks. |

All fields are empty by default. See [Webhooks](/docs/developers/webhooks.md) for the payloads.
