# Create, switch, and delete chatbots

> Create a new chatbot, move between chatbots, delete a chatbot, or transfer it to another owner.

## Before you start

* **Plan:** the number of chatbots you can create depends on your plan. See [Plans and limits](/docs/reference/plans-and-limits.md).
* **Role:** to delete or transfer a chatbot, you need to be a Super Admin on it. See [Team members](/docs/guides/account/team-members.md).

## Create a chatbot

**1. Open Chatbots**

In the top navigation, select **Chatbots**.

**2. Start a new chatbot**

Select **Create New Chatbot**.

**3. Set up the chatbot**

Type a name in **Chatbot Name**. You can change the other appearance fields now or later. See [Customize the widget appearance](/docs/guides/widget/appearance.md).

**4. Create it**

Select **Create Chatbot**.

If you already have the maximum number of chatbots for your plan, SiteGPT opens the pricing page instead of the create form.

### Check that it works

The new chatbot opens. It has no content yet. Next, [add your website](/docs/guides/content/add-website.md).

## Switch between chatbots

* In the top navigation, select **Chatbots**. The page lists every chatbot you own or are a member of. Select a chatbot to open it. If someone invited you to a chatbot, the invite shows above the list, under **Pending Invitations**. See [Accept or decline an invite](/docs/guides/account/team-members.md#accept-or-decline-an-invite).
* When a chatbot is open, select its name at the top of the sidebar. Then select another chatbot from the list.

## Copy a chatbot

SiteGPT has no duplicate feature. To make a similar chatbot, create a new one. Then add the same content and copy the settings from the first chatbot by hand. See [Chatbot settings](/docs/reference/settings.md) for the list of settings.

## Delete a chatbot

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting a chatbot is permanent. You cannot restore it. Its content, conversations, leads, custom responses, and members are deleted. Its email addresses are removed.

Before you delete, export what you want to keep. You can export [leads](/docs/guides/leads/manage-leads.md) and [conversations](/docs/guides/monitor/review-conversations.md). If you only want to hide the chatbot from your website, remove the embed code instead.

**1. Open General settings**

Open the chatbot. In the sidebar, under **Advanced**, select **Settings**. The **General** tab opens.

**2. Find the Danger Zone**

Scroll to **Danger Zone** at the bottom of the page.

**3. Delete the chatbot**

Select **Delete Chatbot**. Your browser asks you to confirm, because this cannot be reversed. Confirm the dialog.

Only Super Admins see the **Danger Zone**. Any Super Admin of the chatbot can delete it, not only the owner.

### Check that it works

The chatbot is no longer in your **Chatbots** list. The chat widget no longer works on sites where the embed code is still installed.

## Transfer a chatbot to another owner

You can move a chatbot to another person's account. The dashboard has no screen for this. Use the CLI or the API.

* **Who can transfer:** a Super Admin of the chatbot.
* **Plan:** the CLI and the API need the Growth plan and above on your own account. See [Plans and limits](/docs/reference/plans-and-limits.md).
* **CLI:** run `sitegpt chatbots transfer`. See [CLI: Chatbots](/docs/cli/chatbots.md#transfer-a-chatbot).
* **API:** send `POST /api/v2/chatbots/{chatbotId}/transfer`. Your API token needs the scopes `chatbots:write`, `members:write`, and `members:delete`. See [Authentication](/docs/developers/authentication.md).

What happens:

* The new owner becomes a Super Admin, and their plan now sets the chatbot's limits.
* A WhatsApp number on the chatbot moves with it and uses one number of the new owner's WhatsApp add-on. The moved number counts as the new owner's newest number. If the new owner's add-on does not cover all their numbers, the moved number pauses, not a number that they already had. See [If a number is not covered](/docs/integrations/whatsapp.md#if-a-number-is-not-covered).
* The chatbot's email addresses move with it. Each one uses one inbox of the new owner's AI Email Support add-on and counts as the new owner's newest inbox. If the new owner's add-on does not cover all their inboxes, the moved inboxes pause first. See [If an inbox is not covered](/docs/integrations/email.md#if-an-inbox-is-not-covered).
* By default, the old owner is removed from the chatbot. You can keep the old owner as a member with a role you choose.
* If the new owner has no SiteGPT account, one is created. The new account has no plan.
* A transfer is blocked if either account has a HIPAA agreement. See [HIPAA](/docs/account/hipaa.md).

> [!WARNING]
>
> The chatbot answers visitors only while its owner has an active plan. If the new owner has no plan, the chat widget stops working until they subscribe.
